What Is “Good Night” In Tagalog
GOOD NIGHT IN TAGALOG – Here is another term in the English language that we are going to translate in the Filipino language.
The English term that we are going to translate is the greeting “good night“. We must first know its definition in the dictionary.
Definition
It is a phrase which expresses good wishes on parting at night or before going to bed. It can also be spelled as goodnight or good-night.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary says that it is used to express good wishes in the evening and is often said when you leave or someone is leaving or going to sleep.
Collins Dictionary, on the other hand described it as something to say to someone late in the evening before one of you goes home or goes to sleep.
Translation
According to TagalogLang, there is actually no equivalent native translation of the phrase good night, although it would be “Magandang Gabi”
However, Magandang Gabi’s actual translation is “Good Evening”, since evening is synonymous to night. Good Evening, however, is used to greet someone who you will meet in the evening, which is contrary to the term we are discussing.
Another close and more appropriate translation of good night is its tagalized form “Gudnayt“.
Lastly, “Paalam” can be considered a translation for goodnight due to the latter’s descripton and Paalam is the general term used to say when someone is leaving.
