Filipino Celebrities Reacts to #GoodbyePhilippines Hashtag

FILIPINO – Here’s the reaction of Filipino celebrities to the trending phrase used to diss the government, #GoodbyePhilippines.

On Tuesday, March 24, the Congress granted President Rodrigo Roa Duterte special powers to respond to the 2019 novel coronavirus pandemic. He thanked the lawmakers for granting him temporary powers as the county faces the crisis.

The “Bayanihan to Heal as One Act” will give the president more powers. It includes the control of private businesses, emergency cash aid to poor families, among others.

After the news broke out that the lawmakers passed the bill that gives the president special powers, “Goodbye Philippines” immediately became a Trending on Twitter.

The viral phrase was used to diss the government. The online community and Filipino celebrities aired their reaction to the topic.

Spoken word artist Juan Miguel Severo suggested better things to do than saying ‘goodbye’ to the country. These included “Thrive, Philippines, “Resist, Philippines, “Register to vote, Philippines,” and “Choose better, Philippines.”

“All of this and more but never goodbye. Our bullies shall not take what is ours,” he added.

Filipino indie singer-songwriter Bullet Dumas urged his countrymen to fight. “Anong goodbye Philippines??! Mga weak. Tayo! Laban!”

Comedian Ethel Booba meanwhile said “No to Goodbye Philippines. Yes to God bless the Philippines and Go Go Go Philippines. Charot!”


Writer and director Kip Oebanda said “The stories of sacrifice, generosity, of art and humanity can’t make me say Goodbye Philippines. I believe in the Filipino people. I just don’t trust the leaders. There’s a difference.”

Indie composer Johnoy Danao said we have to keep going for our countrymen who feel hopeless amid crisis.

“Wag naman Goodbye, Philippines.Para niyo na ring inabandona yung mga nawawalan na ng pag-asa.Yung mga walang pribilehiyong mamili kung lalaban pa rin sila o hindi na. Padayon lang, hindi lang para sa sarili.”
