WHO Chief Warns COVID-19 Pandemic Accelerating As March Comes To A Close
PANDEMIC RISING – The World Health Organization Director-General warned that the COVID-19 Pandemic is accelerating.
Previously, it took the coronavirus roughly three months to reach 100,000 cases. Following this, the virus only took 12 days to complete the 100,000. Currently, the deadly disease is about to double the number and reach 400,000 cases soon.
Meanwhile, according to an article from Yahoo News, that number is believed to be a mere fraction of the true infections.
As such, WHO’s Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters that the pandemic is “clearly accelerating”. However, he emphasized that the trajectory of the outbreak could still be changed.
We are not helpless bystanders. We can change the trajectory of this pandemic,
Additionally, he highlighted the importance of social distancing and staying at home. Previously, a single patient in South Korea was responsible for two clusters that were linked to 80% of the cases in the country.
But, he noted that asking people to stay indoors and adhering to social distancing is only a defensive measure. As per the report, he stated:
To win, we need to attack the virus with aggressive and targeted tactics
[…] testing every suspected case, isolating and caring for every confirmed case and tracing and quarantining every close contact
As of now, there is no tested and proven cure for COVID-19. However, there have been companies that are about to begin clinical trials for vaccines.
With this in mind, WHO’s director-general warned against the use of medicine not proven to be effective against the deadly disease.
Currently, the new coronavirus has affected millions of people worldwide. Moreover, there have been 378,394 people infected with COVID-19. Furthermore, 16,491 have succumbed to the deadly disease.
