We have been thinking to align arrangements across the Tasman Sea and I appreciate the consultation that I’ve had with prime minister Jacinda Ardern in dealing with these issues.

Recently, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison imposed enhanced border measures to curve the spread of COVID-19. Based on a report from ABC Australia, the order applies to all non-citizens and non-residents.

However, Australians would still be able to return from abroad. But, they are required to self-isolate for 14 days upon arrival in the country.

Previously, the government had already banned foreigners from hard-hit countries by COVID-19 such as China, Iran, Italy, and South Korea.

About 80 per cent of the cases we have in Australia are either the results of someone who has contracted the virus overseas or someone who has had direct contact with someone who has returned from overseas

So, the overwhelming proportion of cases in Australia have been imported.

Measures we have put in place have obviously put an impact on that and this is a further measure now that can be further enhanced

As per the report, Morrison had also urged Australians overseas to return to the country.

Those in remote parts of the world, that can prove challenging but for those in other places, it is our intention to ensure we can maintain flights to enable them to come home as soon as possible
