China Will Send Help To PH Amid Coronavirus Outbreak

CHINA – The government of China will send medical supplies and health experts to the Philippines to help fight against COVID-19.

On Thursday, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte addressed the nation amid the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the country. He said he will ask for assistance from China if the worsens.

The 74-year-old chief executive said he received a letter from China’s President Xi Jinping assuring him that they will help the Filipino fight against the deadly virus. “All we have to do is to ask. Ako ang tingin ko, maybe there will be a time, if things deteriorate, that I have to call on China to help,” he said.

During the coronavirus briefing, President Rodrigo Duterte praised President Xi Jinping for his consoling words. “To the Chinese government, to the people, especially to President Xi Jinping, thank you for the consoling words and maybe, I hope that it would not reach to that point but maybe we will need your help,” he said.

On Sunday night, March 15, the country’s death toll due to the coronavirus rose to 12. The Department of Health (DOH) said the total number of infected also climbed to 140.

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying tweeted on Sunday saying State Councilor Wang Yi told Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. that the Chinese government will send help to the Philippines to fight the spread of the virus.

“State Councilor Wang Yi just called with Philippine FM Locsin. We feel the same as the Philippine people are going through difficult times. We will do our utmost to help. Medical supplies and experts will soon go to the Philippines.”

Aside from the Philippines, the Chinese government also pledged that they will help other countries hit by the coronavirus including Spain and Italy.
