WHO: All Nations Must Brace For Possible “Global Pandemic”

WHO – The World Health Organization said that the COVID-19 had peaked in China but warned all nations to prepare for a “global pandemic”.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, chief of the World Health Organization said that the peak of COVID-19 epidemic in China happened between January 23 and February 2, adding that the number of new cases “has been declining steadily since then”.

Ghebreyesus told reporters in Geneva that the virus can be contained, further praising China for its aid to prevent an even bigger spread of the disease via unprecedented lockdowns and quarantines in or near the epicentre of the outbreak.

Meanwhile, increase of cases in other parts of the world has prompted similar drastic measures. This also resulted in the fall of more than 3% in many European stock markets.

COVID-19 or Coronavirus disease 2019 remains unabated with Afghanistan, Bahrain, Iraq, Kuwait and Oman confirming their first cases on Monday.

China also continued its countermeasures against the virus, further cancelling its agenda-setting annual parliament meeting for the first time ever since the 1960 Cultural Revolution.

As per the report, in Iran, death toll increased on Monday by 12. However, there are concerns that the issue might be worse than officially acknowledged. ILNA, a semi-official news agency, cited one solon in Qom, a religious centre, who said that 50 people had died.

The Government of Iran denied the claim and pledged of transparency. Despite this, the officials reported about 64 infections in the nation.

In China, among the 77,000 infected were 2,592 fatalities. WHO’s head of health emergencies program Michael Ryan said that a team from the UN would be arriving in Iran.

Ryan warned, however, against drawing conclusions about the mortality rate. The nation “may only be spotting severee cases” since the epidemic was still at an early stage.

“We need to understand the exact dynamics of what has happened in Iran, but clearly there have been gatherings for religious festivals, and then people coming and then moving afterwards,”
