Bacolod Mass Wedding: 220 Couples Wed Amide COVID-19 Scare
BACOLOD MASS WEDDING – Bacolod mayor Mayor Evelio Leonardia conducted a mass wedding participated by 220 couples who wore masks for COVID-19.
According to SunStar, the 220 couples tied their knots in a mass wedding called “Kasalan ng Bayan:220 on 02-20-2020” while amidst the scare of Coronavirus Disease 2019.
Mayor Bing (Leonardia) was joined by officials, who served as principal sponsors. This included Congressman Greg Gasataya and Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran.
Also among those who were present were Luis Gonzales of the Philippine Statistics Authority-Negros Occidental, and City Civil Registrar Hermilo Pauyon.
The city health office provided beforehand free hand sanitizer and masks for the couples. People who were in the Bacolod Government Center, where the mass wedding was held.
Bing sought the guidance from Dr. Marlyn Convocar of the Department of Health for organizing such big event in the city due to the COVID-19 issue.
He assured the health department that they will take into account and strictly implement preventive measures against the virus.
“Through your regular updates on the Covid-19 status in the region and the vigilant measures undertaken by our Bacolod Inter-Agency Task Force against Covid-19, we feel confident that we are properly addressing this health emergency,”
As per the report, Familiaran said that most of the couples were on ling relationships who finally decided to marry.
“Put God above first, then the rest will follow. The Lord almighty will do the rest. Love your husband and wife ‘til death do us part,”
The vice mayor added that it is the city government’s tradition to have mass wedding every February.
