No Big Events In Iloilo City For February, March Due To COVID-19
ILOILO CITY – The Iloilo City government said that there will be no big events in the city on this month until March due to COVID-19.
According to Panay News, Jerry Treñas, the city mayor, announced the cancellation of the 2020 Paraw Regatta Festival which was set from February 23 until March 1.
This was after he sought the advice of Department of Health (DOH) Region 6 and Iloilo Festivals Foundation, Inc. (IFFI).
The central office of DOH earlier strongly urged the public to avoid events with large crowds in order to avoid being infected with Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
DOH secretary Francisco Duque III also suggested the cancellation of public events until further notice. He did clarify, however, that it is up to organizers whether they want to cancel the events or not.
Treñas said that the festival, as well as other big events will be rescheduled to April.
“Masugod kita Abril kay indi pa kita kabalo kon ano pa ang matabo sa sini nga COVID-19,”
As per the report, Paraw Regatta is a race of wind-propelled native boats. The festival is currently on its 48th year and is recognized as the oldest sailing event in Asia and the largest in the Philippines. As of now, there are no exact dates as to when it will be set.
Meanwhile, the first ever Iloilo Summer Arts Festival is scheduled to April 3 to May 17.
The Department of Education Region 6 also announced the cancellation of 2020 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet in Aklan.
