France Records Its First Case of Tomato Virus

TOMATO VIRUS – France recorded its first case of the said virus that targets plant and can lead to negative economic impacts to farmers.

Not only humans and animals can be the target of viruses but as well as plants. In fact, virus has the capacity to lead the whole crops into waste once there is a contamination.

One of the viruses that can contaminate plants is the tomato virus. It was first reported in 2014 when it hit Israel’s greenhouses. The said virus has spread to America and Europe.

Recently, another case of the tomato virus crossed the surface. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, France recorded its first case of the said virus that target plants (tomatoes). It is not risky to humans.

According to Paris’ agriculture ministry, the plants in the Finistere region were the ones contaminated by the virus and it has the capacity to damage the whole crops. Discolored patches are appearing on the fruits of the plants.

Based on the report, the authorities have previously warned that the virus may have negative economic impact to farmers. There is still no known cure for it thus tomatoes in greenhouses would be destroyed to prevent its spread.

The samples have already been confirmed by the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety. France assured to continue regular inspections and to check seeds and plants.
