3 Dead, 179 Others Injured After Plane Skids Off Wet Runway Due To Poor Weather Condition
ISTANBUL – 3 people died and 179 others got injured after Pegasus Airlines plane skidded off at the end of the wet runway.
On Wednesday (February 5, 2020), Health Minister Fahrettin Koca reported that the Pegasus Airlines plane broke into three pieces after skidding off along a wet runway after landing into Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen airport.
Koca told the reporters that the plane carries 183 people including passengers and airline personnel. 179 of them are wounded while 3 people have died after the accident. The casualties were now being treated at 18 hospitals in the area.
Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya said that the place has 177 passengers and six (6) crews from the western province of Izmir. He also said that the accident happened due to the inclement weather condition.
“The plane could not hold on the runway due to poor weather conditions and skidded for around 50-60 metres,” Yerlikaya said.
Boeing 737-86J broke into three pieces after it dropped around 30 to 40 meters at the end of the wet runway. However, the spokeswoman of Pegasus Airlines did not provide further details regarding the incident.
