7.7 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Off the Coast of Jamaica
EARTHQUAKE – A 7.7 magnitude quake was recorded off the coast Jamaica and it was followed by several aftershocks.
One of the natural calamities that cannot be predicted is quake. It can happen anytime and anywhere and most countries that are lying in the Pacific Ring of Fire are more prone to it.
A quake may or may not be felt at all. In some cases, strong quakes have not only led to infrastructure damages but as well as to the loss of lives. Usually, one strong quake is followed by hundreds of aftershocks.
Recently, the people in the Caribbean were shocked by a strong quake. It was felt as far as Miami since the point of origin.
Based on a report on CNN, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake recently hit off the coast of Jamaica about 80 miles away. The shaking has reached Miami which is already 440 miles away from the epicenter of the quake.
There was no tsunami records at the Port Royal, Jamaica and Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic but a 0.4 feet tsunami was recorded in the Cayman Islands. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded several aftershocks following the strong quake with one that was 6.1 magnitude.
Based on the report, the said 6.1 magnitude aftershock of the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that hit off the coast of Jamaica did not spark tsunami threat. It is according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center of the National Weather.
A citizen by the name of Alec Pultr who is a resident of Ogier, Grand Cayman expressed that they were working when the quake took place. He tagged as the biggest he encountered “by far”.
