Manila Water, Maynilad Warn of Higher Rates Amid Duterte’s Warnings

Pres. Duterte Warns To Go After Businessmen Over Issue Involving Manila Water & Maynilad

MANILA WATER – The two (2) water concessionaires, Manila Water and Maynilad, warned of higher rates amid the warnings of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte.

Currently, one of the biggest issues that the Philippine government is involved with is the water concessionaire issue. The government was ordered to pay billions to the water concessionaires as they failed to reach their target.

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte was triggered by the issue. He stressed that the agreement between the government and the water concessionaires is unfair on the part of the former.

According to the Pres. Duterte, in case the water concessionaires will not reach their profit, the government will have to pay them. The government is currently ordered to pay P7.39 billion to Manila Water and P3.4 billion to Maynilad for their losses.

Pres. Duterte warned to go after the water concessionaires in this issue. He even mentioned businessmen Jaime Zobel-Ayala and Manny Pangilinan as he slammed the water concessionaires during a speech in Malacañang Palace. According to him, he will file “economic sabotage” against those who are involved in the issue.

Based on a recent report on ABS-CBN News, following the warnings of Pres. Duterte, the government refused to extend their agreements with Manila Water and Maynilad. However, the water concessionaires warned of higher rates due to several expenses like the putting up of a plant for the treatment of the raw water.

According to the report, the agreement will supposedly end in 2037. The water concessionaires stressed that the government and the Metropolitan Water Sewage System (MWSS) are represented in the processing of setting the rates.

On the part of Maynilad, an executive of the water concessionaire expressed that they do not want to go against Pres. Duterte. They apologized over the arbitral ruling and stressed that they support the works of the President.

As of this writing, the issue is still ongoing. More information will be released as soon as updates are out.
