President Duterte Says Martial Law in Mindanao Would End This Month

President Rodrigo Duterte rejected another extension of Martial Law in Mindanao and declared that the ruling would end on December 31, 2019.

On Tuesday (December 10, 2019), Presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo said that the Martial Law in the region of Mindanao would end this month after President Duterte rejected another Martial rule extension.

Mr. Duterte decided to put an end to the military ruling in the southern Philippines due to the weakening extremist rebellion and act of terrorism in the area. The martial ruling would expire at the end of the year.

“The Palace is confident on the capability of our security forces in maintaining the peace and security of Mindanao without extending Martial Law,” Panelo said.

Duterte declared the region of Mindanao under Martial Law in 2017 after the Islamic State Terrorist Maute Group attacked the city of Marawi. The sporadic firefight between the government forces and the terrorist group.

Marawi City was liberated on Oct. 17, 2017 but the President declared another year of extension for 2018. Eventually, Duterte announced another military ruling extension until the end of the year 2019.
