Kung Fu Nuns In Nepal Kicking Out Gender Stereotypes

KUNG FU NUNS – Get to know the Kung Fu nuns in Nepal who used martial arts to challenge gender stereotypes.

Nowadays, people are wanted to learn fighting techniques due to the increasing number of crimes all over the world. They want to learn how to defend themselves from danger.

Parents enroll their kids in martial arts schools so that they know who to fight back. However, they should always be advised not to use or practice their skills with other students.

Kids are not just the one who’s ready for combat in this generation. The nuns in Nepal are also practicing Kung Fu. Their video practicing was shred on South China Morning Posts’ Facebook Page.

Based on the report, Buddhist nuns were forbidden to do exercises, leading prayers, and singing. That’s why in 2008, these nuns decided to learn Kung Fu to kick out gender stereotypes. They are also in a battle with human trafficking and violence against women.

It can be seen in the video that the nuns from Druk Amitabha Mountain Nunnery were a pro on handling their swords and machetes. A nun named Jigme Konchok Lhamo, admitted that they were criticized by some lots of people.  

“Whatever we did at the beginning we got lots and lots of criticism we had to face lots of threats and people didn’t really like it because we have been breaking rules, we were breaking the stereotypes which have been there for a long and long generations and people haven’t been liking it,” she said.

According to the report, these Kung Fu nuns travel across South Asia to teach self-defense classes to young girls.

“Kung Fu gave us this confidence, we are very confident that we feel physically strong, we feel mentally strong, we feel more confident to do any kind of work any kind of job we are given,” said Lhamo.
