Based on a report from CNN, the agency sent a message to reporters on Wednesday that stated old jeepneys can operate if they pass the motor vehicle inspection system (MVIS).

This is also called their “roadworthiness” test. Included in the test are emission and safety tests.

Adding to this, the agency also told old unit operators to file for a petition for consolidation on or before June 30. Also, unit operators should express their petition to modernize.

As per the article, if operators fail to comply with the requirements, their routes would be made available for interested applicants. The move by DOTr was then welcomed by Senator Grace Poe.

This is for their sake. This is a lot more pragmatic for us, expedient. That if it is still plyable, if it’s safe, and doesn’t have any adverse emissions, that it be allowed and it will also save a lot

She also emphasized that the DOTr already admitted that they have only modernized 1.5% of 2,550 of the Philippine’s jeeps. This was already three years into the PUV modernization program.

In lieu of this, Senator Gatchalian stated that the program needs to be revisited. “There are a lot of bottlenecks, that’s why the take-up as reflected in the documents, mabagal na mabagal”, the Senator said.

However, the government still noted that they would continue to push their modernization program. This, despite the program being tagged “anti-poor”.
