Tropical Storm Quiel Intensifies Into Severe Tropical Storm, PAGASA Says

The state weather bureau PAGASA reported that Tropical Storm Quiel has already intensified into a severe tropical storm.

On Thursday (November 7, 2019), the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration released the latest weather updates in the country. The weather agency said that Quiel would bring rains over parts of the archipelago.

PAGASA reported that Quiel has developed into a severe tropical storm and was last located at 360 km west-northwest of Coron, Palawan. The weather disturbance has maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers per hour and gustiness of up to 115 kph.

The severe tropical storm could also strengthen into a typhoon within the next 48 hours with maximum winds of 118 to 220 kph but it has a slim chance to make landfall in any parts of the country.

Quiel’s trough and the tail-end of a cold front, as well as the localized thunderstorms, may cause flash floods and landslides. Between Thursday and Friday (November 8), light to moderate rains is expected over Cagayan including the Babuyan Islands and Apayao.

Kalinga, Apayao, Ilocos Norte, Zambales, Bataan, Palawan, Mindoro Provinces, Antique, Iloilo, and Guimaras would also experience light to moderate and occasionally heavy rains.

The weather agency also warned the residents in the affected areas to take precautionary measures for possible flash floods and landslides during the occurrence of severe thunderstorms.

The weather disturbance is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Saturday (November 9, 2019).

Meanwhile, another Typhoon named “Halong” with maximum winds of 175 kph and gustiness of up to 215 kph was spotted at 3,030 km east of extreme Northern Luzon.
