GenSan Councilor declared Leah Navarro persona non-grata
Veteran singer Leah Navarro was declared persona non-grata by General Santos City Councilor Atty. Franklin M. Gacal Jr. due to this reason.
The resolution that Leah is no longer allowed to go to the said city in the Mindanao region came after her controversial tweet. Amid the series of strong earthquakes in different areas in the region, Former Supreme Court Spokesman Atty. Theodore Te tweeted, “What’s with all the earthquakes in Mindanao?”
The veteran singer replied to this by saying, “Retribution”. Based on the article from Philippine Entertainment Portal, Councilor Gacal cited the explanation of the term as “a punishment inflicted on someone as vengeance for a wrongful or criminal act.”
That said tweet of Leah went viral last October 31. Following this, the lawyer and the veteran singer received overpouring criticisms from netizens. Atty. Te deleted his tweet, apologized and had this explanation. Leah also did the same.
On the other hand, that did not stop the local government of General Santos City to declare Leah Navarro as persona non-grata. In the resolution, released to the public on November 5, the local government cited that the veteran singer “has no factual or moral basis to accuse the people of Mindanao of having committed any wrongful or criminal act that deserves the punishment from the Great Almighty.”
Councilor Gacal added in the resolution that the tweet of Leah was “despicabe” and for him it was the veteran singer’s “callous reaction to the tragedy that struck the island is motivated by her irrational politically-motivated anger.” It is known to many that Leah is a vocal critic of President Rodrigo Duterte who is former Mayor of Davao City in Mindanao, based on the article.
