PHIVOLCS Warns Public That Earthquakes Cannot Be Predicted
PHIVOLCS – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reminded the public that earthquakes cannot be predicted.
The volcanology and seismology agency clarified that the time and place where earthquakes will occur cannot predicted. This was in lieu of rumors of future earthquakes that spread online.
According to Inquirer, the agency posted on old photo on Twitter which contained a supposed-to-be “warning” from them about a devastating earthquake that will happen in Metro Manila, only to be proven fake.
They, however, added a new caption, saying that we cannot predict when or where an earthquake or tsunami might occur.
They also clarified that their role is to earthquake scenarios of hazards and impacts to be used as a guide for mitigation, preparedness, and response
Here is their post on Twitter:
Based on the report, this came after several areas in Mindanao, which includes area in Davao and Cotabato, were hit by severe earthquakes and several aftershocks since October.
The Tulanan quakes, according to the agency, were caused by a string of movement by the active faults in the area, which occurred last July 9 in a magnitude 5.6 tremor, and October 16’s 6.3 magnitude earthquake.
Last October 31, they also clarified that they did not issue any tsunami warning. As of now, experts haven’t fond a way to prevent the earth’s crust from moving, adding that the tremors stop only when they lose energy.
