Within two weeks, Mindanao was rocked by two massive earthquakes. Buildings were destroyed, people injured, and lives were lost.

The quake was revealed to have begun close to the epicenter of the October 16 6.3-magnitude earthquake which killed 5 people. The quake was at a shallow depth of 7 k.m. while the recent one was at 9 k.m.

According to Philvocs, the earthquakes that hit Mindanao were interrelated active faults. These can are found in Central Mindanao.

The agency has said that they are expecting small to moderate magnitude tremors near the epicenter. This may continue for days to weeks.

Based on an article from Inquirer, the tremors were part of the quakes in Central Mindanao. These were the 5.6 magnitude quake in Makilala on July 9 and the Oct. 16 6.3-magnitude quake near Tulunan.

Among the most affected areas was the City of Digos. Due to the damages, they have declared a state of calamity.

The Department of Education has stated that about 200 schools sustained minor or major damage. They added that 185 classrooms were in ruin and 1,066 were damaged.

The announcement from Phivolcs also stated that there were at least 847 aftershocks recorded from Oct. 16 and 29. Since Tuesday, there were 237 aftershocks noted.

The active faults included in the Central Mindanao area are:

  • M’lang Fault
  • Makilala-Malungon Fault
  • North Columbio Fault
  • South Columbio Fault
  • Cotabato-Sindangan Fault

With the massive quakes jolting Mindanao, people were afraid of a possible tsunami. However, Philvocs have dispelled the possibility.

This was because the quake that hit Mindanao was an “in-land” quake. However, they noted that there may be possible aftershocks.
