At Least 7 People Dead After 2nd Earthquake in Mindanao

MINDANAO EARTHQUAKE – Panic ensued as people fled to the streets, fearing for their lives due to a massive 6.6-magnitude earthquake that left hundreds injured, buildings destroyed, and at least 7 people dead.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the earthquake began about 9:04 a.m. It was reported to have started about 25k.m. southeast of Tulunan town, Cotabato.

Adding to this, the quake was revealed to have begun close to the epicenter of the October 16 6.3-magnitude earthquake which killed 5 people. The quake was at a shallow depth of 7 k.m. while the recent one was at 9 k.m.

Phivolcs director Renato Solidum added that the area affected was a seismic zone. Along with this, there were several faults located near the area as well.

Erlinton Olavere also, a science research specialist from Philvocs also said that if the earthquake is shallow, the more intense it is felt on the surface. It could also cause more damage.

Based on reports from Inquirer, the quake killed two people in Magsaysay town, Davao del Sur. The first one was a grade 9 student, Jessie Riel Parba, who was hit by falling debris.

The other person who died was Benita Saban. This person was buried in a landslide in Brgy. Tagaytay.

There was also a pregnant woman, Marichel Morla who was killed because of a falling beam of a house ear Barangay Banayal, Tulunan. She was merely visiting the place when the quake started.

A father and his son in Arakan town were buried by loosened rocks. The father was a 22-year-old named Angel Andy, and his son was Reneboy was just 7 years old.

A volunteer ambulance driver was also killed from a collapsed building. In Digos City, a 36-year-old man named Jeremy Sarno was evacuating to higher grounds and died because of a heart attack while riding a motorcycle.
