Loving Mom

In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, a poor woman identified as Aisha Othman frequently eat uncooked rice and ice cubes so her daughter Paymitra Abdullah could eat bread. The family is living at Desa Rejang PPR (People’s Public Housing).

Aisha’s husband is working as a security guard at Cheras, a nearby district in Malaysia and earning RM 1,500 ($360). The family have to pay for rent and other living expenses as well as paying back-rent at his mother’s unit living them to for days without food.

The father buys bread, which is reserved for their daughter while his wife Aisha buys ice cubes from neighbors and eat uncooked rice to survive because they don’t have enough cash to purchase cooking gas.

I am afraid the cooking gas will run out (if I cook the rice). So if I ever become too hungry, I will eat ice cubes,” Aisha said.

Film director Azreen Madzlan created a 20-minute documentary showing the struggles of families living in PPR units, which helped Aisha to find a job at Wangsa Maju grocery store. The family was also included in the government’s welfare program.
