What Are The Two Types Of Solstice?
TWO TYPES OF SOLSTICE – In this topic, we will now learn and discuss the two types of solstice and the meanings of each.
A solstice is an instance in time where the Sun seems to reach its northernmost or southernmost day arc or excursion relative to a plane called the celestial sphere.
Like the equinox, the solstice usually happens twice at June 21 and December 21.
Solstice came from two Latin words sol, which means sun; and sistere which means to stand still, because at this time, the sun appears to stand still.
Two Types
The two solstices both occur in two hemispheres due to the fact that the seasons are switched. In other words, if summer occurs the Northern Hemisphere, then winter occurs in the Southern Hemisphere
- Summer Solstice
- Occurs in June 21 in the Northern Hemisphere and December 21 in the Southern Hemisphere.
- Winter Solstice
- Occurs in December 21 in the Northern Hemisphere and June 21 in the Southern Hemisphere.
Now, if you are not going to base the solstice in hemispheres, they can be called the following:
- June Solstice
- Occurs in June 21 and also known as the Northern Solstice
- December Solstice
- Occurs in December 21 and also known as the Southern Solstice
