TWO TYPES OF EQUINOX – In this topic, we will now learn and discuss the two types of equinox and the meanings of each.
An equinox is described as an instance in time when a plane called the celestial equator passes through the sun’s center.
The equinox occurs twice usually on March 20 and September 23. It is the point where the sun’s center is above the equator. In an equinox, night and day have the same length of about 12 hours.
Night and Day is determined at the sun’s edge called the solar terminator or the twilight zone.
Equinox came from two Latin words aequus, which means equal; and nox or noctis, which means night, forming the word aequinoctium.
Two Types
The two equinoxes both occur in two hemispheres due to the fact that the seasons are switched. In other words, if spring occurs the Northern Hemisphere, then autumn occurs in the Southern Hemisphere
- Vernal Equinox
- Occurs in March 20 in the Northern Hemisphere and September 22 in the Southern Hemisphere.
- Autumnal Equinox
- Occurs in September 22 in the Northern Hemisphere and March 20 in the Southern Hemisphere.
