Etymology
Zouk came from the French Antillean creole word zouke, sekwe, or more, which is derived from the verb secouer, which means to “shake intensely and repeatedly”. Artists from Haiti used that term who toured the Antilles in the 70s to 80s.
Over time, it became the word zouk in Antillean creole which means “party” or “festival”.
