Rodolfo P. Pantoja, Now Telecom President, stated that they believed the Philippines lacked insufficient telco facilities. In a similar note, President Duterte had promised to remove the duopoly held by Smart and Globe.

Last year, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) had also named another player in the telco sector. “Dito Telecommuity Corporation” or previously known as “Misatel”.

According to an article by CNN, DITO Telecommunity Corporation is a consortium of Davao businessman Dennis Uy. DITO is expected to gain its first subscribers from major cities like Metro Manila, Davao, and Cebu by November this year.

Previously, Now Telecom planned to partner with Dito for mobile services. They revealed that they are primed to offer 5G wireless broadband to their customers.

In July, Now Telecom partnered with the Philippine Fiber Optic Cable Network Ltd. (PFOCN). They are a subsidiary of Singapore-based Hyalroute Group, a supplier of fiber network technology.

Last year, Now Telecom was in the running for the third telco spot but lost to Dito. The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) stated that they may order radio frequency holders to return them to the government.

They stated that holders who use the frequencies insufficiently must give way to new entrants. Examples of these entrants could be the next big player in the telecommunications sector.
