PLDT President Says Rolling Out Of 5G “Difficult And Expensive”

PLDT – PLDT Inc. president Manuel Pangilinan recently said that switching to 5G will delay as rolling it out is difficult and expensive.

Previously, the Philippine Long Distance Telephone company announced that it aims to launch 5G services, which is now the fastest mobile internet connection, for corporate customers and selected home broadbands.

Pangilinan said that they were still finalizing their suppliers and other solutions. He further said that they already raised the security issues with China-based Huawei.

Recently, Pangilinan recently said that switching to 5G will take a while since its rollout is difficult and expensive.

According to ABS-CBN, Pangilinan said that they will attempt to build the infrastracture on existing towers but the lack of 5G-compatible devices hinders the rollout.

The towers for the services has to be closer to one another since their frequency can cover up to about 500 meters, which is wider compared to 4G or LTE which cover 3 to 5 kilometers from the cell site.

As per the report, Pangilinan said that on the sidelines of an even in Manila City Hall that rolling out is hard and expensive since communication towers cost up to ₱ 8 million.

Pangilinan further said that it would take a while since people need handsets as well.
