First aid is an immediate assistance given to people suffering from both minor or serious disease and injury. This procedure aims to prevent the condition from worsening and to help the casualties to recover.

Initial intervention in a serious condition is very important to save a person’s life. It is usually performed while waiting for an ambulance, which would bring patients to the nearest health care center for a complete medical treatment.

Here are some tips on how to perform first aid:

  • Clear the airways from any obstruction, which might cause choking to patient.
  • Confirm if the person can breathe, if not, provide rescue breathing.
  • Apply medical procedures such as chest compression and rescue breathing.
  • If the patient is wounded, make sure to dress severe wounds and apply defibrillation to the heart

However, first aider should use primary survey first before performing the medical procedure

  • Check for dangers to the injured person and yourself, if you can do nothing about it, call for professional help
  • Make sure that the patient is responding

CPR

Chest Compression

  • Place ten heel of one hand in the middle of patient’s chest
  • Place the other hand on the first hand
  • Push the chest down about 1.5 (Children) to 2 inches (Adult)
  • Push breastbone up and down for about 5 cm for 30 times

Mouth to mouth resuscitation

  • Make sure the airway is open
  • Pinch the patient’s nose
  • Raise the chin upwards with two fingers of your hand
  • Take a deep breath and exhale into the airway
  • Check if its chest rise and fall
  • Perform these step for five times
