P50k Fine vs Teachers in ‘No Homework’ Bill A Mistake, Quezon City Rep. Alfred Vargas Says

Quezon City Rep. Alfred Vargas revealed that the P50,000 fine against those who will violate the ‘No Homework’ Bill bill a “Mistake”.

Over the past few days, the proposed ‘No Homework’ bill has been one of the most controversial topics nationwide. The proposed homework ban garnered various reactions from the Filipino people.

House Deputy Speaker Evelina Escudero filed the House Bill 3611 seeking to prohibit teachers from giving assignment to school children. The bill covers the kindergarten level up to grade 12 students.

'No Homework' Bill

On Thursday (August 29, 2019), Alfred Vargas admitted that he made an honest mistake for charging a P50,000 fine for the teachers who will give assignments over the weekend. Vargas said that it was accidentally included on sanctions that will be given to the offenders.

According to the proposed bill, the violators will face a fine of P50,000 and imprisonment of up to two (2) years. The penalty provision is made for another bill being prepared by the staff of Vargas.

'No Homework' Bill

“It was a legislative mistake. Honest mistake po iyun na pinaninindigan ko naman po. Hindi naman kasi iyan criminal law. Hindi ‘yan dapat lagyan ng penal [aspect]… Para po iyon sa isang bill kong inihahanda. Nalito lang po kami,” Vargas said.

Vargas has also apologized to those who were hurt and those who were concerned.
