Ban Homework Policy Impossible, Says Teachers Group

BAN HOMEWORK POLICY – A group of teachers said that the proposed ban homework policy for students is rendered impossible.

Previously, two legislators issued bills which would restrict teachers from giving homework to students.

Quezon City Rep. Alfred Vargas filed House Bill 388 or the “No Homework on Weekends Act of 2019” which restricts teachers from giving homework to students on weekends.

House Deputy Speaker Evelina Escudero, on the other hand, filed House Bill 3611 which includes a no-homework policy and a policy which would let kids leave their textbooks in school.

According to ABS-CBN, Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) National Chairperson Joselyn Martinez said that the K-12, which seeks to produce high school graduates that are ready for either employment or college by adding two more years to the 10 year basic education.

Martinez further said that the range of topic and competencies that are set by the curriculum are impossible to cover within class hours, thus, ending with having an added and beyond-school hour work for both teachers and students.

She added that students under K-12 is calculated by their output like skits, posters, and written materials, where teachers are ordered to design and facilitate via their daily lesson logs.

As per the report, Martinez clarified that they are not issuing homework and assignments in order to burden the students, further noting that it is demanded by the program that the teachers’ performance evaluation system ensure the program’s implementation.

The ACT chair lastly said that no amount of work can force the students and teachers to achieve more than what is really doable in a set period of time, thus, the need for homework.
