Leatherback Turtle Found Dead in Camarines Sur
A Leatherback Turtle or locally known as ‘Pawikan’ has been found dead along the shoreline of Barangay Caraosan, Bula in Camarines Sur.
The City Environment and Natural Resources Office of Iriga reported that the marine creature might die after allegedly failing to resurface for oxygen. The turtle has been found last Sunday (July 28, 2019).
A local fisherman identified as Tirso B. Renegado found the sea turtle already dead and entangled with rope. CENRO Iriga staff reported that the sea creature has a length of 138 centimeters and a weight of 200 kilograms.
The Ecosystems Management Specialist (EMS) II Werson B. Amante and EMS I Norielet M. Reciproco conduct an investigation in the area and examined the Pawikan.
The examination result shows that the 200-kg leatherback turtle drowned due to failure to resurface for oxygen. The experts also believed that there was an attempt to catch the marine turtle but the catchers might have backed off because of its weight.
The barangay officials said that the Pawikan’s carcass was buried 200 meters of the shoreline.
However, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) reminded the public to turn over any wildlife to proper authorities and immediately report such incidents.
