School Bags: How Much Weight A Child Should Carry?
How much weight a child should carry on its school bag packed with books and other school supplies, according to studies?
Nowadays, most elementary or primary school students are carrying heavy school bags packed with books and other essentials.
However, parents and guardians should set a limit when it comes to the maximum weight of their children’s school bag.
The University of Granada and Liverpool John Moores University conducted a research to determine how much weight a child should carry on its backpack or trolley.
The researchers conduct a kinematic analysis with 49 elementary students who were carrying traditional backpack, trolley, and without any weight.
Children carrying various types of bags were given different loads weighing 10%, 15%, and 20% of their respective weights.
The study shows that the children’s hips and trunk have the greatest adjustments when using backpacks or trolleys.
Carrying backpacks makes huge changes on children’s motion while pulling trolley makes fewer changes.
The findings recommend that primary school students should not carry backpacks weighing more than 10 percent of their body weight and must not pull a trolley greater than 20 percent of their body mass.
