Types of Conjunction

Here is a list of the three(3) types of conjunction, their meaning, and as well as some examples under each type.

Coordinating Conjunction

The conjunctions under this type are joining or combining words, phrases, clauses, and sentences that have the same ranks. The FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) are under this type.

Examples:

  • The dog and the cat cannot be kept in the same cage.
  • Mother cooked the food early so we can eat early too.

Correlative Conjunction

Under this type of conjunction, the conjunctions are working as a pair. Some examples under it includes – either/or, not only/but, and neither/nor.

Examples:

  • Either Jericho or Jestoni will pick you from school later.
  • Not only the plates but also the glasses were broken.

Subordinating Conjunction

This type gathers one dependent clause and one independent clause into one sentence. The examples under this type includes – after, until, while, because, since, before, whereas, and although.

Examples: (The dependent clauses are italicized)

  • Before you open the door, check on the window first.
  • The students will proceed to their rooms after the flag ceremony.
  • Sonya got tired because of the dance.
