For food dressings, flavorings, and preservatives, Apple Cider Vinegar or ACV is a common ingredient as it is also becoming popular as a remedy to certain health issues. ACV can be used against obesity, heart disease, cancer, and bacterial infections.

But too much of everything is bad indeed. Despite the fact of it having numerous health benefits, taking too much of vinegar have downsides and potential side effects.

  • Tooth Decay – Due to presence of acetic acid, vinegar damages the tooth enamel leading to loss of minerals and tooth decay.
  • Hypokalemia – This is a medical term for low potassium. However, it was reported that large doses of apple cider vinegar taken for a long time led to low blood potassium and bone loss.
  • Gastrointestinal Issues – It may be a natural weight loss aid as it suppresses the appetite of a person making him feel fuller for longer. But keeping food in stomach has unwanted effects. It can also worsen the condition of those who have digestive problems such as stomach ulcers or acid reflux.
  • Skin Burns – Undiluted vinegar applied directly to skin might cause burns.
  • Throat Burns – It is the acetic acid present in the vinegar that burns the throat.
  • Drug Interactions:
    • Diabetes medication – Insulin with vinegar might “dangerously low blood sugar or potassium levels.”
    • Digoxin – A medication that lowers blood potassium levels and if taken with ACV might lover it too much.
    • Certain diuretic drugs – This medication causes potassium excretion.

To lower risk of unwanted effects:

  • Reduce quantity of vinegar
  • Reduce amount of time that vinegar stays in the skin
  • Dilute with water or use a ingredient
  • Limit contact with teeth, drink with straw.
