Local Groups Support Sending Waste Back To Canada

Local Groups Supported The Shipping Of Waste Back To Canada

LOCAL GROUPS – At least five local groups supported the Presidents call to ship, illegally-sent container vans with trash back to Canada.

Huge container vans filled with trash was sent by Canada to the Philippines back in 2013 and 2014. In response, President Rodrigo Duterte stated that he is prepared to declare war against Canada if they did not take it back.

The Canadian government, however, recently released a statement saying that they are willing to work with the Philippines to resolve the trash issue.

The demands were made following a legal opinion that found Canada violated the treaty Basel Convention. Also, after President Duterte’s declaration.

This is based on the article from Inquirer. Based on the article,

President of Bangon Kalikasan Movement, Joey Papa, released a statement demanding the removal of the trash ‘swiftly’. In his statement:

“Canada should act swiftly to retrieve their garbage from our country. No more promises. It has ignored us for six long years. We do not deserve such disrespect, much less the damage wrought by their garbage on our environment and affected communities.”

More statements came from groups: Consumer Rights to Safe Food, Cavite Green Coalition, Green Convergence for Safe Food, Healthy Environment and Sustainable Economy, and Mother Earth Foundation.

Consumer Rights to Safe Food president, Rene Pineda, suggested that the Canadian President should order the shipment of the waste quickly and without preconditions.

Cavite Green Coalition also said that they are ran out of patience.

Green Convergence for Safe Food’s executive director also said that the waste or the ‘overstaying garbage’ is an offense to the law and to others’ rights.

Mother Earth Foundation’s chair, Sonia Mendoza, referred to the waste issue as ‘long-standing irritant’ and suggested that it should be ‘put to rest’.

That is all there is to it, at least for now. We’ll post updates as soon as we got them.
