NGCP Places Luzon Under Red Alert, Gatchalian Wants DOE To Probe

NGCP Places Luzon Grid On Red Alert, Win Gatchalian Wants DOE to Probe Power Shortage

NGCP – Senator Win Gatchalian wanted DOE to probe the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines’ (NGCP) declaration of red alert in Luzon.

The NGCP is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and development of the country’s power grid.

It controls the supply and demand of electricity and updates the daily power status in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

Last Monday, April 8, the NGCP announced that the Luzon grid was placed under yellow alert from 2 pm to 4 pm.

The yellow alert means that the area has lesser reserves of power while the red alert is a condition where there are zero ancillary services.

However, the Department of Energy (DOE) assured the public that there is enough supply of electricity in Luzon.

Based on a report from Remate, the NGCP just declared the red alerts of the supply of power in the Luzon area.

The chairman of the Senate committee on energy, Win Gatchalian, slammed the NGCP’s latest announcement.

According to the report, senator Win Gatchalian was shocked about the news and stated that Luzon has enough power reserves for this dry season.

“These kinds of confusing messaging does not help the public at all,” he said.

Win Gatchalian said five power plants are not working today, therefore they lose 1,720 megawats of electricity.

“Pero ngayong araw, limang planta ang hindi gumana at dahil dito ay nawalan tayo ng 1,702 megawatts na kuryente…”

“Nagsimula na rin ang Meralco ng manual load dropping kaninang ala-una ng hapon. Ibig sabihin ay may mga kababayan na tayo na nagtitiis ng sa init at kawalan ng kuryente,” he added.

Based on the report, Win Gatchalian appealed to the DOE to investigate the red alert announcement of NGCP.

He also asked to prepare contingency measures to assure that there will be no power interruption this coming May election.

“Moreover, DOE should remain vigilant for possible collusion due to thin electricity reserves in the midst of high demand,” he said.
