BI Recommends Suspension vs 18 Immigration Personnel Over Alleged Extortion

18 Immigration personnel are now facing preventive suspension after allegedly extorting 15 Korean nationals arrested in Pampanga.

On Saturday (April 6, 2019), the Bureau of Immigration (BI) recommends the suspension of its 18 agents who were accused of committing extortion.

BI said Commissioner Jaime Morente suggested the suspension of accused immigration agents for allegedly extorting Koreans.

“We have requested the DOJ (Department of Justice), which is our mother department, to issue the suspension order,” Morente said quoted by CNN.

Morente also asked the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to launch a separate investigation for the possible filing of criminal charges against the agents.

The Immigration Bureau was already taking actions regarding the issue after the Koreans filed a complaint to the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Malacañang Palace.

The BI agents allegedly attempted to extort millions of pesos from the Koreans arrested in Angeles City, Pampanga.

The BI commissioner said that its Board of Discipline would determine the corresponding sanctions and penalties to be filed against the accused agents.
