Aftershocks May Follow 5.5 Magnitude Earthquake in Pangasinan According to Phivolcs

PHIVOLCS – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) warns the public of possible aftershocks following the 5.5 magnitude earthquake in Pangasinan.

Almost every day, earthquakes rock different areas in the Philippines. Details about such incidents is released to the public by Phivolcs through a bulletin.

In its bulletin, the institution reveals the location of the quake; the exact time it occurred; and its depth of focus, origin, and magnitude. It is also the body announcing warnings on possible aftershocks.

Recently, a strong quake hit a part of the Philippines. According to Phivolcs, a 5.5 magnitude earthquake hit Pangasinan and there is a possibility that there will be aftershocks.

Along with the warning of possible aftershocks following the 5.5 magnitude earthquake that hit Pangasinan, Phivolcs revealed the other details about the said quake that was felt not only in Pangasinan but as well as in several other areas.

According to the institution, the quake hit Aguilar, Pangasinan at 06:25:19 in the evening yesterday, February 6, 2019. It was located at 15.87°North, 120.28°East – 006 km South 62° East of Aguilar, Pangasinan.

The quake was initially recorded at 5.6 magnitude and was, later on, downgraded to 5.5 magnitude. It was tectonic in origin and has a 137 km depth of focus.

Intensity II was felt in Subic, Zambales and the cities of Pasay, Manila, Mandaluyong, and Quezon while Intensity IV was felt in Baguio City. According to the institution, Villasis, Pangasinan felt the Intensity V.

In its bulletin, Phivolcs also revealed the instrumental intensities felt in several areas. Intensity I was felt in Laoag City; Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte; San Ildefonso, Bulacan; and Sinait, Ilocos Sur.

Malolos, Bulacan; Gapan City; Baguio City; Gapan City; and Guagua Pampanga felt Intensity II while Olongapo City and Dagupan City, Pangasinan felt Intensity III.
