Antonio Carpio Says the Country is Safe on PH-China Memorandum of Understanding in Oil, Gas Signing Deal
ANTONIO CARPIO – Acting Chief Justice Antonio Carpio said the Philippines is safe in signing the Memorandum of Understanding regarding the oil and gas deal with China.
Following the recent two-day visit of China President Xi Jinping in the Philippines, he’s up to build again a friendship with the country after 13 years.
Jinping even left President Rodrigo Duterte a thank you letter for his hospitality.
Duterte and Jinping made several signing deals which could hopefully help them both including the oil and gas development. They are to cooperate on exploring the resources on the West Philippine Sea.
Based on a report from GMA, Antonio Carpio stated that the MOU of the two countries about the oil and gas cooperation is just a safe move by the government.
Carpio is confident about the deal and he thought that the Department of Foreign Affairs did a great job in safeguarding the Philippines.
“I think it’s just an agreement to explore an agreement,” Carpio said.
Furthermore, Antonio Carpio is hopeful that the Chinese will decide to use one of the Philippines’ service contractors. That action will automatically acknowledge that the Scarborough Shoal belongs to the Philippines.

The good thing there, since we’re using the service contract as a vehicle, then that recognizes that the area being explored or exploited belongs to the Philippines,” Carpio said.
Based on the report, Antonio Carpio trusted the DFA lawyers and the foreign advisers. He reminded the Filipino to remain watchful once the joint exploration is made and details must be publicized.
He really has a good feeling for the oil and gas deal but the Philippine people should be cautious about the country’s collaboration.
