The Weather Bureau paGASA Warns Public Of Over 6-meter Storm Surges In The Areas
The state weather bureau PAGASA has warned the public of up to 6-meter storm surges in some parts of the country affected by Typhoon Ompong.
On Thursday afternoon (September 13, 2018), the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced that several areas might have experience storm surges.
PAGASA said that over 6-meter storm surges are expected to hit the coastal areas of Cagayan, Isabela and Ilocos Sur.
PAGASA forecaster Nikos Peñaranda said that the approaching Typhoon Ompong with an international name “Mangkhut” might cause storm surges that may hit Aparri, Palanan, and the entire casts of Ilocos Sur.
“Ito po based sa historical storm surge data. Sa past events, maaari pong abutan ng 5 to 6 meters,” Peñaranda said.
The weather agency also warned the fisherfolks in the typhoon-affected areas that sea travel remains risky and venturing is not advisable.
Ompong was still packing maximum sustained winds of 205 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of 255 kph but slightly slowed down at 20 kph.
The weather disturbance was also expected to develop into a super typhoon before directly hitting Cagayan.
