El Niño Will Develop Before 2018 Ends, Says PAGASA

EL NIÑO – According to Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services, the El Niño phenomenon is expected to surface before the 2018 ends.

The nation faced series of typhoons over the past weeks, on after the other. The latest typhoon “Karding” left us with a devastating flood that has been affecting thousands of people over the past days. At least six people died due to the flood.

Not only that, the two storms “Leepi” and “Bebinca,” though outside PAR, enhanced the effects of Habagat, which caused a heavy downpour on the northern regions of the Philippines.

Albeit the rain, PAGASA said that there is a possible chance that El Niño at the fourth quarter of 2018.

According to a report in PhilStar, Ana Liza Solis, OIC of climate monitoring and predicting section in PAGASA, said that most models show instances of warming in the tropical Pacific. This would then become a weak level of the phenomenon at the end of 2018.

Solis even added that a neutral condition will occur from June to August. Afterwards, El Niño comes after with a chance of 60%. Below to nearly normal rain is expected from July to December. However, western parts of Luzon is expected to face above normal rains.

As per the report, PAGASA forecast from near average to slightly warmer surface air temperatures on most parts of the country during the aspect period.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued an El Niño watch, specifying an increasing chance for the phenomenon’s conditions to develop.

That being said, Solis said that the Philippines has yet to face 10 to 14 more cyclones until the end of the year. The total count is below the average, which is 19 to 20 cyclones, due to El Niño phenomenon.
