21-Year-Old Pinoy Skater Michael Martinez To Represent PH In Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics

The Filipino figure skater Michael Martinez will represent the Philippines in the upcoming 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea.

On Thursday (January 25, 2018), Michael Martinez confirmed that he will join Pyeongchang 2018 in South Korea next month.

Martinez is returning to the Winter Olympics to the represent the country despite with having the knowledge regarding the technicalities of the competition.

“I do not know the technicalities, but for now all I know is that I am going to compete at the 2018 Olympics and represent our country,” Martinez said quoted by CNN.

Sweden’s Alexander Majorov withdrew from the competition for personal reasons prompting the International Skating Union to offer the slot to Martinez, according to Pico Martin, Sports Director of the Philippine Skating Union (PSU).

The Pinoy skater failed to secure a spot in the Winter Olympics after losing two spots during the qualifying tournament in Oberstdorf, Germany last September 2017.

The 21-year-old athlete first joined the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia last 2014 wherein he landed 19th place out of the 24 skaters who joined the Men’s Figure Skating event.

Pyeongchang 2018 will be held in South Korea from February 9 to 25, 2018.
