Mayon Volcano’s Eruptive Activity Latest Updates Released By Phivolcs

The state volcanology agency Phivolcs has released the latest update on Mayon Volcano’s eruptive activity.

On Tuesday (January 16, 2018), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has released the recent news and information regarding the irregularities of Mount Mayon.

The eruptive activity of Mt. Mayon has been characterized by silent effusion from a new summit lava dome, lava flows down the Miisi and Bonga Gullies and lava collapse events, according to Phivolcs.

About 9 episodes of tremor, wherein four of it have short-duration of lava fountaining and 75 lava collapse has been recorded by the seismology agency.

Mount Mayon is currently under an alert level 3, which has a high possibility of a possible explosion within weeks or days after showing irregularities.

The authorities also restricted the public from entering the 6 kilometer-radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and the 7-km Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) because of the sudden explosion.

Phivolcs also warned the public to be vigilant against pyroclastic density currents or lahars and sediment-laden streamflows along channels.

Aircrafts were also advised to avoid flying near the Mount Mayon’s summit because ash from a sudden eruption will be dangerous.
