Largest Asteroid To Pass Closely Near To Earth On Sept 1

Largest Asteroid To Whiz By Sept 1

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) said that the largest asteroid in more than a century will pass close near to Earth on September 01, 2017.

In 1981, Florence Nightingale, the famed 19th-century founder of modern nursing has discovered the largest asteroid in more than a century and named it “Florence”. This asteroid is the largest one to pass close to the earth.

Florence will pass near our planet at a distance of about 4.4 million miles or 7 million kilometers. It is the second asteroid that will pass close to earth since the first asteroid, which was discovered more than a century ago.

The US space agency stated that Florence measured about 2.7 miles or 4.4 kilometers will be the biggest asteroid in the earth’s vicinity since 1890.

Paul Chodas, manager of NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies said that Florence would pass by closer to Earth on September 01, 2017.

“While many known asteroids have passed by closer to Earth than Florence will on September 1, all of those were estimated to be smaller,” said by Chodas quoted by Phys.

The scientists were planning to study the asteroid using ground-based radar imaging in California and Puerto Rico, which will reveal the real size of the asteroid and its surface.

NASA also explained that asteroids are small rocky bodies, which orbit the Sun and rarely collide with planets. A car-sized asteroid that hits earth burns up before it reaches the planet’s surface.

Scientists also said that large asteroids such as Florence threatens the planet’s civilization only once every few million years and they believed that Florence was not among them.
