Classes In Leyte Suspended By Local Officials Due To Magnitude 5.1 Quake

Classes on all levels in Leyte particularly in Ormoc City and Albuera has been suspended by the local officials due to the magnitude 5.1 quake.

On Wednesday (August 23, 2017), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) announced that a powerful tremor was felt in Albuera and Ormoc City in the province of Leyte around 6:26 am.

The volcanology agency said that Intensity 5 was felt in the neighboring towns of Ormoc and Albuera, Intensity 4 was felt by the residents of Pastrana, while Intensity 3 was jolted Tacloban City and Palo. Phivolcs also explained that the tremor has a depth of 5 kilometers.

Classes

Ormoc Mayor Richard Gomez said that the local officials have suspended the classes on all levels due to the tremor. While the authorities are inspecting the building and establishment in the affected areas to ensure the safety of the residents.

Gomez also said that as of now there is no injuries or casualties have been reported due to the strong quake. But, they are now verifying the reports saying that a part of the city hospital was destroyed by the tremor.

Previously, other parts of Leyte province including Ormoc has been struck by a powerful magnitude 6.5 earthquake. Residents of 3 villages affected by the strong tremor still remain in the evacuation centers and needing supplies of relief goods and medical items.

Phivolcs also warned the residents affected by the magnitude 5.1 earthquake to be well-prepared as a possible number of aftershocks are expected.
