Formal Trade Investigation Launched By US Into China

The United States Formally Launches Trade Investigation Into China

A formal trade investigation was launched by the United States into China’s intellectual property practices and forced transfer of American technology.

On Friday (August 18, 2017), the United States has formally launched the trade investigation into China, which was called by US President Donald Trump to be conducted this week, according to the statement of US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer.

“On Monday, President Trump instructed me to look into Chinese laws, policies, and practices which may be harming American intellectual property rights, innovation, or technology development,” said by Lighthizer quoted by GMA.

Trade Investigation

Lighthizer also said that he determined that the sensitive issues need to undergo an investigation after consulting government agencies and stakeholders.

Beijing’s failure to protect know-how patents and allegedly forcing some companies to share information with domestic partners as the price for doing business in Chinese markets have prompted the foreign firms to file complaints.

However, the foreign companies were not pressing too hard for their government to make necessary actions due to fear of losing access to the giant nation.

Trade Investigation

US President Donald Trump said that Washington will not turn a blind eye anymore. He also promised to ensure the safety of copyrights, intellectual property, trade secrets, and patents, which is important for their security.

An investigation under Section 301 of US trade law, which addresses intellectual property was launched by Lighthizer after Beijing warns that everybody will lose in the trade war event between the two largest economies in the world.
