Leonardo Dela Cruz, the brother-in-law of professed drug lord Kerwin Espinosa was shot dead by the authorities in a police operation on Wednesday, August 9 in Barangay Upper Piedad, Toril in Davao City.
According to police station commander Chief Insp. Ronald Lao, the authorities were supposed to serve him 4 warrants of arrest but the suspect opened fire at them.
The suspect was killed in the said gun battle in his apartment unit at around 10 a.m.
Based on the report of ABS-CBN News, the warrants issued were in connection to his supposed violation of the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act and the Dangerous Drugs Act and murder of 2 cops in Albuera, Leyte.
The police station commander noted that Dela Cruz served as the hitman of family Espinosa.
Authorities were also able to retrieve several firearms from the crime scene.
It was last year when Kerwin Espinosa admitted that he is running a drug syndicate which reportedly protected by lawmen and several officials.
His confession came during a Senate inquest over the death of his father Albuera Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr., who was killed after he allegedly fought against the police searching contraband items inside his cell.
