“AGAIN, SOLDIER’S LAST THOUGHTS WERE OF HIS FAMILY

Even while Pfc Ramonito “Bon Bon” Occena was hospitalized for injuries sustained in Marawi, he was selfless and was thinking of family all the time.

After being wounded on June 4 and recuperating in a hospital where he had the opportunity to meet President Duterte, Pfc Occena “reinserted” into the frontlines on July 15 to fight the Maute terrorist group again.

A day before reinsertion, Pfc Occena, still single at 27, requested his friend, fellow wounded soldier Pfc Allan Benbinuto, to send money to his mother Ma. Belinda V. Occena in Sipalay City.

Pfc Benbinuto said he told Pfc Occena to take good care of himself. The latter, he said, even waved to him before he left.

Pfc Benbinuto showed me the piece of paper bearing the details of the remittance in Pfc Occena’s own handwriting.

“Magkakasama tayo, Mom, noong July 15 nung pinadala ko ito sa Palawan (Express) sa Iligan,” he said.

Ten days later, Pfc Occena died a hero’s death.”
