Ernesto Abella Confident That Congress Would Grant Martial Law Extension In Mindanao

Malacañang Palace was confident that the Congress will grant President Duterte question of martial law extension in Mindanao.

Previously, President Rodrigo Duterte declared martial law throughout the entire region of Mindanao due to the extended gun battle between the government forces and the Maute Terror Group in Marawi City.

Mr. Duterte declared the martial rule in the south to control the current situation in Marawi City. The sporadic firefight between the two groups turned the city into a chaotic scenery, which prompted the residents to leave the area.

Martial Law Extension

The 60-day martial law period has been declared last May 23, 20, 7 and will expire on Sunday (July 23, 2017). The president requested to extend the martial law in Mindanao to put an end to the ongoing conflict in the beleaguered city/

On Saturday (July 22, 2017), Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella said that he trusts Congress would extend the martial law as the writ of habeas corpus was currently suspended.

“We trust Congress to recognize the gravity of the situation and support the Executive Department in declaring that the factual and legal basis upon which martial law and the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus was upheld is continuing and still persists,” said by Abella quoted by GMA.

Martial Law Extension

The proposed martial law extension until December 31, 2017 has been discussed the House of Representatives and members of Senate. Some of the lawmakers complained that the martial rule extension until end of the year was too long.

The extension of martial law ails to allow the local government forces to pursue their decisive action against the extremists spreading terrorism in Marawi City.

Around 400, 000 people were displaced and over 500 people have died due to the siege in Marawi City, most of them are extremists.
