Joseph Estrada’s cleanup drive for Manila Bay was staged and ‘for publicity only.’
MANILA BAY – Manila Mayor Joseph Estrade spearheaded a clean-up drive for the rehabilitation of Manila Bay because of too much trash but turned out that it was ‘for publicity only.’
As reported by the ABS-CBN’s news program TV Patrol, the video of the report was re-uploaded by the YouTube Channel ABS-CBN News which featured the staged clean-up drive.
It was mentioned in the report that instead of cleaning the Manila Bay, they have instead thrown back the trash into the water.
Mayor Estrada has invited the media to show their extensive clean-up for the Manila Bay.
It is because the said body of water remained dirty and smelly because of the trash being thrown by the people despite the resolution passed on 2008, the writ of continuing mandamus, which gave orders to the government agencies to rehabilitate the area.
The resolution even said, “Court rendered a Decision in G.R. Nos. 171947-48 ordering petitioners to clean up, rehabilitate and preserve Manila Bay.”
As per the statement of the Manila Mayor, “We’ll bring back the glory of Manila Bay,” it has, however, turned the other way around for instead of cleaning up, a lady was caught throwing back rubbish and garbage back to the water and two other men even dived into the water to spread it all over.
A news team asked the mayor if he knows about it and he just said,“For publicity, pero we are serious in cleaning Manila Bay.”
As of now, there were still no confirmations as to who gave such order for the sake of photo opportunity.
It was also found out that a certain hotel near the bay spearheaded the project and not the Manila local government unit.
Atty. Sol Arboladura, director of Manila Tourism said, “This is spearheaded not by the city but by Rizal Park Hotel in cooperation with some government agencies such as the City of Manila… It will be done monthly.”
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) also reacted upon seeing the incident and the Undersecretary Maria Paz Luna, OIC of the Legal Legislative Affairs and Anti-Corruption ng DENR, have indicated, “Kapag nagtapon ka ng basura sa Manila Bay, mayroon naman talagang parusa ‘yan sa batas. Ang depensa siguro nila diyan ay kinuha rin naman nila. Sana lang nalahat nila. Hindi sana natin kailangan gawin ‘yun kasi marami namang puwedeng kunin sa Manila Bay. Kalkalin mo lang ‘yung kaunti sa shore.”
