PH Drug War To Be Investigated By The US Human Rights
The US human rights commission was set to investigate on how the anti-illegal drug campaign was implemented in the Philippines.
This week, the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission was set to conduct probe regarding the effects of the war on drugs in the country. It also said that the lawmakers will study on how the administration implemented the crackdown on illegal drugs in the country.
The Commission will also issue recommendations on how to resolve drug-related problems and will also suggest policies ensuring the accountability of the security personnel on an alleged violation of human rights.
The Extrajudicial Killings (EJK) in the country was the primary concern of both local and international human rights group. The vigilante killings were allegedly killed around 7, 000 alleged drug suspects last year since President Rodrigo Duterte took his office.
“Although extrajudicial killings have been a major human rights concern for some time, in its Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 2016, the Department of State recognized that such killings increased sharply over the last year.
According to Philippine National Police (PNP) statistics, 7,025 drug-related killings were carried out between July 1, 2016, when Duterte assumed office, and January 21, 2017 – an average of 34 per day,” said by the Commission on their social media site quoted by GMA.
Phelim Kine, the deputy director of Human Rights Watch, Ellecer Carlos, spokesperson of iDefend, and Matthew Wells, senior crisis advisor of Amnesty International will be included on the panel members.
Previously, the increasing death tolls of drug related cases prompted the two American senators to file a bill prohibiting the sale of US weapons to the Philippine police force.
Legitimate police operations took the lives of more than 2, 600 drug personalities since Duterte seated as the president of the Philippines, according to the data shown by the Philippine National Police (PNP).
However, over 6, 000 deaths was still under investigation involving alleged drug suspects and Duterte administration denied the alleged involvement in the killings, then he pointed out that it was carried out by vigilante groups.
